FREE Summer in the City

central-park

It’s easy to spend in New York City, but we thought you should know that a trip to the Big Apple doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Here some great activities that are offered FREE (yes, free!) during the summer months.

Grand Central Terminal (42nd Street)
Right across the street from the Roosevelt, is this wonderful piece of history. Wander around the terminal at your own pace, or take one of the many guided tours available.

Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA) (Fifth Avenue)
Although there is a “suggested” admission, you can pay what you can afford to see one of the greatest art museums in New York City. If you’re in NYC for the second Tuesday of June, definitely check out the Museum Mile Festival. From 82nd Street to 104th Street, traffic is closed and the streets are filled with music, art and laughter. Free of charge.

Monday Night Movies at Bryant Park
Bring a snack and a blanket and catch a movie on the lawn at Bryant Park. Typically movies begin at 8:00pm, but it gets crowded so get there early.

River To River Festival
The 2008 River to River Festival is a summer celebration featuring hundreds of free music, dance and cultural programs in a variety of venues throughout New York. It is the largest summer long, free arts festival in the nation and takes place from June through September.

Central Park (Central Park, NY)
Central Park is a great place to escape from the chaos of New York City streets. The Central Park Conservancy’s free walking tours are a great way to get acquainted with the park. In summer months, performances of opera, dance, comedy and music are all showcased at the Summerstage in Central Park. Some concerts are benefits, but many are free!

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn, NY)
The amazing 1.13-mile-span of the Brooklyn Bridge is often called an outdoor cathedral. Take an early morning walk across the bridge and see New York City waking up.
