Composer George Gershwin is known for famous works including Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess. The Roosevelt Hotel is known for making history. The two came together in November of 1926 when Gershwin staged the first public performance of five new preludes for piano in the hotel. They were intended to be the introduction for a sprawling 24-part work he called, a series of musical vignettes inspired by New York City.
The massive project was never completed and only Three Preludes was published. The classic examples of early 20th-century American classical music influenced by
jazz have been arranged for solo instruments, small ensembles and piano.
Just another fun fact about the history of The Roosevelt!
