Coney Island: Brooklyn’s Treasure

Looking for a unique day trip during your stay in NYC this summer? Then hop on a subway and take the ride to Brooklyn’s famous Coney Island!! You can always just sit and relax on the beach, but Coney Island is unique in so many ways and offers quite a few entertainment and recreational activities. Here are just a few things to do!

The Boardwalk
One of the most famous attractions at Coney Island is the boardwalk.  You’ll find street performers, spontaneous dance acts and delicious snacks all along the way.  You won’t want to be at Coney Island and miss out on eating a Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog at it’s original restaurant located right on the corner of the boardwalk!  Lines will be long, but it’s worth the wait. While on your stroll and eating that delicious hot dog,  you won’t be able to deny the history factor that is held within that boardwalk so stop by the Coney Island History Project and learn a bit about this fascinating NYC treasure.

Ride the Cyclone
Built in 1927, it is one of America’s oldest wooden coasters still in operation. If you are a thrill seeker, this is a must-do. Although the creeky sounds and shaky ride gives more of a scare then the actual ups and downs!

Wonder Wheel
Located at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, this ferris wheel was opened in 1920 and is a landmark to the skyline on the beach. It’s also a great way to see all of Coney Island from above. Bring your camera on the ride for a great photo op!

Sideshows By the Seashore
Experience the thrill of a traditional ten-in-one circus sideshow. Freaks, wonders and human curiosities are all here for your entertainment at Coney Island!

Brooklyn Cyclones
Take in a game of good ‘ol fashioned baseball at MCU Park located right on the boardwalk.  Watch the Brooklyn Cyclones take on the Staten Island Yankees while catching the ocean breeze and grabbing a famous hot dog.  Is there any other way to spend a summer day?

New York Aquarium
Coney Island is home to the New York Aquarium and it’s a wonderful place to spend the day with the kids.  Offering shows and exhibits all year round, stop in for a few hours or you could spend the whole day exploring.

New Amusement Parks
Opened this season, Coney Island now has some new amusement parks suited for the roller coaster junkies, as well as more family friendly rides. Be sure to check out Luna Park and the newest Scream Zone for lots of fun the whole family can enjoy!

With so much to do at Coney Island, you can plan an entire day exploring this Brooklyn treasure.  Wear comfy shoes and cool clothing and bring lots of water (and of course, your bathing suit).  Stop out at the end of the piers to take a glimpse at the Coney Island skyline and see the captured history of an era gone by.
