The Jewish Museum in New York will be opening an exhibit this week for the world famous magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini. From October 29, 2010 – March 27, 2011, visitors will be able to see posters, photographs, films, art work and magical props both used and inspired by the true legend and great magician.
Famously known as the “Handcuff King”, Houdini amazed his audiences by freeing himself from handcuffs, chains, ropes, and straitjackets, often while hanging from a rope in plain sight. One of his most famous stunts was escaping from a nailed, roped packing crate after it had been lowered into the water. Houdini first attempted this performance in our very own East River on July 7, 1912.
Although Houdini was one of the first and greatest celebrities of the 20th century, he has never been the subject of a major museum exhibition until now. Houdini died on Halloween day in 1926 and with the anniversary of his death this weekend, the exhibit is perfectly timed.

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s hard not to think about anything but sweets. And when I think of sweets, I think of Dylan’s Candy Bar. When you walk into the store on 60th and 3rd Ave in NYC, you are literally like a kid in a candy store. The atmosphere is bright and fun and you can find any type or brand of candy your little heart desires. They even have a full section of treats that date back to when you were just a young one. With three floors of goodies, its a total event. You’ll probably want to bring a full wallet too. I can never leave there without dropping a substantial amount of money on sweets.
They also offer amazing gift baskets and yes, they have a personal shopper to help you design it. It’s not totally about the edible sweets either. Dylan’s Candy Bar also has cute t-shirts and other wearable items for both you and your kiddies, as well as a complete (and sweet) beauty line.
What better way to spend a day this Halloween season, then to say goodbye to your diet and indulge in chocolate goodness!
