Women’s History Month officially began in 1987 but many people believe the movement started right here in New York City. On March 8th 1857 hundreds of female garment and textile workers went on strike to protest poor working conditions and low wages. The movement expanded every year since, holding a rally of nearly 15,000 female laborers in the streets of NYC in 1908.

Now every March has become Women’s History month to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of women from all over the globe. Here in New York City all 5 boroughs have joined the movement to honor women all month long. From Women’s Jazz Festival March 8th to the gallery installment 31 Women in Art Photography to the Brooklyn Museum’s feature of Judy Chicago’s installation The Dinner Party, there is certainly something and somewhere to celebrate all month long. We’ve come a long way!
